"If you have met one child with Autism,
you have met one child with Autism”
Stephen M Shore
Autistic researcher and university professor
Individuals with ASD generally have a very agitated or an overactive sympathetic (fight or flight) nervous system due to which they may be over-sensitive to ordinary stimuli like touch, light, sound etc and perceive them as threats in day-to-day life.
Autism medication involves certain drugs to manage the symptoms of ASD such as irritability and aggression although these do not have a lasting effect and can have side-effects like any other medication.
Craniosacral therapy (CST) on the other hand, activates the parasympathetic (rest and digest) state of the nervous system that can turn down the volume of sensory sensitivities. This often manifests as a calmer child or adult who is more comfortable within themselves and with the world around them. This improves social interaction.
CST can also reduce inflammation and help restore Vagus nerve function which is often impaired in individuals with ASD. This can support optimal gut function and brain function. This alleviates symptoms of gut dysfunction such as constipation.
It can also help relieve pressure in the membranes around the brain and spinal cord reducing irritability and hyperactivity.
CST can promote overall well-being and potentially lead to better sleep patterns.
Due to these reasons Craniosacral therapy is becoming popular as a therapy for Autism.
Children especially, generally don’t sit still and are fidgety. To even lie on a treatment bed for the length of the treatment is difficult.
I believe, it is paramount for the person to feel comfortable and build trust in me. And that is why I prefer treating children with ASD in the comfort of their own homes. I work around their needs so that they are comfortable during the session. Initially I may work only at the feet or even off the body while the child can read or even play a game or watch a video. Stopping them from doing what they want can cause anxiety and agitation and be counterproductive to making progress.
CST can calm the nervous system, and this can help people with autism to connect better to the world around them by putting them to ease within themselves. Read more here.
